This week someone left a message on my answering machine that they wanted to sponsor ColorCombos. We were pretty excited after receiving this message.
It turns out that they wanted to give me free hosting in exchange for a link on the front page. Since I use Dreamhost, I have no need for free hosting. I might have gone for it if it was for dedicated hosting.
If you were to buy a link on a PR6 page from text-link-ads.com, it would probably cost you a minimum of $50 per month, or $600 per year. Hosting in comparison can be as cheap as $8 or $9 per month. So in essence, he was trying to buy a $600 per year link for $108. If you consider the actual cost to the hosting company, it is probably worth less than $3 per month, or $36 per year. It gets even better if you consider that I don’t need hosting, so it would cost them $0 per year.
The guy couldn’t believe that I had turned it down. He said, “it’s only a small link”. I told him that there has to be value on both sides of the trade. I don’t blame them for doing this. It seems like a great link building strategy. Still, I can’t believe others would sell their links so cheaply.
All of this reminds me of the time someone tried to pay me with ski lift tickets, another service I have no need for!

I finally signed up for GoDaddy’s Domain Discount Club. I don’t know why I didn’t do this years ago. We currently have 67 domains over at GoDaddy. After paying for the yearly club fee, I will save at least $130 per year. If I move my other domains to GoDaddy the savings may increase more than 50%.

Some time last year I sent my picture to Shoemoney so I could get a link to ColorCombos.com. Last weekend I spotted my goofy picture on his front page.

This morning I got an alert that Ryan Perrilloux was taken off of suspension. He still isn’t allowed back on the playing field yet. Coach Miles says that Perrilloux has gotten his act together. I hope this is true. Ryan Perrilloux will have tremendous opportunities in the future, if he can play by the rules.
Les Miles got a new contract and a raise. He now makes $1000 more than LSU’s former coach, Nick Saban. According to the stories, he is now the highest paid coach in the SEC and the third highest paid in the country.

Over the weekend I attended South by Southwest Interactive. I had two main goals for the weekend. I wanted to meet Tim Ferris, the author of The 4-hour Work Week and I wanted to see Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of FaceBook. I met both goals.
On Saturday afternoon, Tim Ferris lead a panel about the “Art of Speed”. Afterwards he signed copies of his book. There were actually two authors at Adobe’s signing table. I felt sorry for the other author. Tim Ferris had 20+ queued up to see him, while the other guy had none. The other guy got so bored he started flipping through The 4-hour Work Week, looking for clues, I guess.
I told Tim Ferris I was having a difficult time finding a “muse”. I asked him how to decide between a service versus a product. He said he picked a product because that’s what he does. He also recommended checking out the book “Moonlighting on the Internet”, which is funny because I just added that to my “to buy” list earlier in the week.
On Sunday, I got to see Mark Zuckerberg during the keynote. There’s a lot of coverage of the keynote. Search for Sarah Lacy / Zuckerberg at Google News to see what happened.

I made it to SXSW in Austin. I will be here from Friday until Sunday. This event is overwhelming.
The program guide is huge. I have 20 pounds of marketing material to carry around, not including my laptop. I’m thinking about unloading all of this junk into my car.
Tomorrow I will stop by Barcamp Austin and pick up one of those cool shirts. I seriously need to make up a schedule to follow so I can get the full benefit out of this event.

Last year Tracinda offered $64 per share for Tesoro. Then Tesoro implemented this plan to dissuade a takeover. Now that the stock is floundering around the low $30’s, they must be hoping that Tracinda or someone else will be templated to pick up a bargain. I’m doubting they will get the $64 price in this environment.

Last night was fun monitoring the election results on Twitter. I like getting all of the on location reports. I did my part by copying and posting the Texas election results from Drudge. A few of the people I know even became delegates, including my boss.
I can see how Twitter can become addictive. Twitter is like the C B Radio of the 21st century. I still don’t have my phone set up right to handle all of the Instant Messages. Right now I’m following the twits from an RSS feed through Bloglines. I would love to have this set up before South by Southwest!
