Getting HDMI to work with a Philips plasma and a Comcast SA HD3000 Cable Box
July 25, 2007
A couple of weeks ago, we finally took the plunge and bought a plasma TV. I’ve wanted one of these for years. And this year I decided I wanted to have one BEFORE football season started. So we bought a 42″ 720 Philips at Sam’s. It cost around $1180 with tax. The next day we bought a glass stand at Circuit City for $150.
The TV worked using the coax cables. But I wanted to have it hooked up using the HDMI cable. So I went back to Circuit City to buy one. The cables at Circuit City are EXPENSIVE. The 3 foot one cost $60. Later that night, I found out that Wal-Mart has 3-foot HDMI cables for $26. They are even cheaper on the web.
That night I hooked up the HDMI cable to the TV and to the set top box. Then I selected HDMI as the source on the TV remote. In theory, that is all you have to do. But no luck. There wasn’t a picture.
I read online that some times the HD3000 has the HDMI port disabled. I called Comcast a couple of times and they said it should work. They suspected that something was wrong with the TV.
From my point of view there could only be 3 possibilities: the cable box wasn’t working, the cable wasn’t working OR the TV wasn’t working. Since I didn’t want to haul a 100-pound TV back to the store, I decided to start switching out the lighter weight parts.
We bought another (slightly more expensive) HDMI cable at Wal-Mart and tried it. That didn’t work.
Then we took our cable box back. I was probably in the Comcast store less than 5 minutes. They gave me a brand new SA HD3000C cable box. I even got a brand new remote.
When we plugged it up at home, it worked right away. It turns out that the first cable was bad also. So, the moral of the story is to upgrade your HD3000 to a HD3000C.
Now we need to buy a surround sound system and a Blue Ray DVD player…
